A Lesson On Fill Power. Fill power is the most misunderstood term in the down industry. Fill power is the true measure of quality in a down fill. It measures of the volume (in cubic inches) that one ounce of down will occupy. The more volume one ounce expands to, the better the quality. Expanded down will trap body heat to maintain an even, comfortable temperature. Look for higher fill powers when you want clean down and a finished product, which provides insulation without bulky weight.

Less costly fills which do not have superior insulating value include:
"White Down", which contains white duck down.
"Down", which contains gray duck down
By law a down comforter need only contain 75% down cluster, the balance is usually small feathers.
